Summary of rodent genotoxicity testing of mobile-phone-type radiofrequency radiation (RFR), and a scoping review mapping 500+ studies on RF-EMF and DNA damage.
Key Findings:
- US National Toxicology Program (NTP) rodent studies, using whole-body exposure to CDMA or GSM signals, suggest RFR exposure is associated with increased DNA damage. Results in several tissues were rated equivocal
- IARC classifies RF-EMF as “possibly carcinogenic to humans” (Group 2B), based on evidence in humans and animals
- A 2025 evidence map of 500+ studies found DNA damage reported in 59% of them.
- Among higher-quality studies, 48% reported DNA damage, and the authors concluded RF-EMF may be genotoxic and could pose a cancer risk
Pilot study testing whether overnight exposure to a 2.45 GHz baby monitor (active vs. sham) affects sleep in healthy adults at home.
Key Findings:
- Insomnia scores (PIRS-20) were higher, meaning poorer sleep, with active exposure: 14.6 vs 9.6 on sham (p = 0.03)
- EEG power in theta, beta and gamma bands increased during non-REM sleep
- A study of people who reported mobile phone-related symptoms (Lowden et al., 2011) found poorer subjective sleep after a 3-hour exposure to an 884 MHz phone signal
- Brain-wave changes during sleep. This is the most consistent signal. Several experiments with pulse-modulated RF-EMF, mostly mobile phone signals, report altered sleep EEG, typically changes in power in particular frequency bands. The Frontiers paper and a review it cites (Ohayon et al., 2019) describe this pattern.
When industry-funded research minimises the risks, who bears the burden of proof? Our key research investigates the intersection of mobile technology, pregnancy, and child development. While findings on reproductive health vary between small and large-scale studies, proactive individuals prefer safety over speculation—opting to shield their daily routine with reliable protection.
Growing public concern
Many people are concerned about the possible effects of EMF on their wellbeing. Studies funded exclusively by the telecommunications industry were less likely to report significant effects (Huss et al., 2007) and (Starkey, 2016).
